What is SSC Stenographer?

SSC Stenographer is a national level and Computer Based Examination which is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for the Recruitment of Stenographer Grade “C” (Group B- Non-Gazetted) and Grade “D” (Group C- Non-Gazetted) in a General Central Service Group ‘C’ & ‘D’ Non-Gazetted post in various Central Government Ministries/Departments, in different States & Union Territories. There are two levels of this exam which consist of all objective type MCQs in Online Test and Stenography questions in Skill Test. Being a Computer-based exam (CBE), the exam is held over for 3 days.

Educational Qualifications:

• The minimum Educational Qualification required by an aspirant is to be at least 12th pass from a recognized Board or University.
• Citizen of India/subject to Bhutan or Nepal or Tibetan/ Burma /Sri Lanka/ Pakistan/East African Countries who relocate to India with the intention of permanently settle in India before 1st January 1962.
• A candidate must lie in the age domain of 18-27 years to be eligible for SSC Stenographer 2019 exam.

General Awareness, General Intelligence/Reasoning and English Language are the three major sections a candidate need to proficient in for Paper-1 of SSC Stenographer Exam.

SSC Stenographer Exam Pattern

The SSC Stenographer Grade C and D examination is conducted in 2 different phases. The first phase is Online Exam consisting of Multiple Choice Questions and the second phase is the Skill Test conducted by SSC.

Paper - 1: Online Multiple Choice Examination :

Important Points:

• Question paper is Objective Type Multiple Choice. Questions are set in Hindi and English except for Part-III.
• There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the question.
• Marks scored by candidates in the Computer Based Examinations, if conducted in multiple shifts, will be normalized and such normalized scores will be used to determine final merit.

Paper - 2: Skill Test:

Candidates will be shortlisted for the skill test on the basis of their performance in the Computer Based Examination. Candidates who qualify in the skill test will be recommended for appointment by the Commission on the basis of total marks in the Computer Based Examination

In this test, candidates will be given a dictation for 10 minutes in English / Hindi:

• Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/ Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office irrespective of the medium of Skill Test of candidate during the examination.
• The skill test will be held at the Commission’s Regional/ Sub Regional Offices or at other Centre(s) as may be decided by the Commission.
• Detailed instructions regarding Skill Test will be sent by the concerned Regional/ Sub Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test

Stage 3: Final Selection

Allocation of candidates will be made to User Departments depending upon their merit position and the option exercised by them. Candidates, who are appointed on the basis of this examination, shall be on probation for a period of two years and during the period of probation, the candidates would be required to undergo such training or pass such examinations as prescribed by the Controlling Authority. On successful completion of the period of probation, the candidates shall, if considered fit for permanent appointment, be confirmed to their post by the Controlling Authority.

Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/ExS/Persons with disability (PWD) etc. categories is available as per extant Govt. Orders:

• The posts of Stenographers Grade ’C’ have been identified suitable for the persons suffering from disabilities of One Arm (OA), One Leg (OL), Both Legs (BL), Blind (B) and LV (Low vision) as per guidelines of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
• The posts of Stenographers Grade ’D’ have been identified suitable for the persons suffering from disabilities of One Arm (OA), One Leg (OL), One Arm and Leg (OAL) Both Legs(BL), Blind (B) and LV(Low vision) as per guidelines of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

SSC Stenographer Selection Process

SSC Stenographer exam is based on the following 2 stages:

1. Computer Based Test and
2. Skill Test

• The older age candidates get benefits in the selection procedure if those have equal marks.
• There is a time duration of 2 hours for general category candidates while visually handicapped candidates have a time duration of 2 Hours & 40 Minutes.
• Candidates who have fulfilled the cut-off marks criteria will be eligible for stenographer skill test.
• The skill test required the typing speed of 80 WPM in Hindi and 100 WPM in English.
• There is no interview involved in the selection process.
