What is KVPY?
Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a program launched in 1999 by the Government of India's Department of Science and Technology (DST) to encourage students studying basic sciences to pursue a career in science research. The program's objective is to locate and facilitate talented and motivated students to pursue a research career. The KVPY initiative focuses on helping students to realize their potential and ensure that the country's best scientific talent is created for research and development. In this way, an identity card is given to each KVPY Fellow in order to have access to National Laboratories / Universities that have agreed to grant special privileges such as libraries, testing services, etc. to KVPY Fellows on ID card production.
The KVPY Fellowship advertisement usually occurs every year on the Technology Day (May 11) and the Second Sunday of July in all national dailies. Selection of students are drawn from those enrolled in the class XI to the first year of any B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude for scientific research. There is an Aptitude Test (in Mathematics and Subjects of Science) that one has to qualify in order to become eligible for fellowship in KVPY. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure. For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude test and interview marks are considered. The selected KVPY Fellows will receive generous fellowship and contingency grant up to the pre-Ph. D. level or 5 years, whichever is earlier. Therefore, KVPY Fellows' summer camps are organized in the country's prominent science and educational institutions.
The Department of Science and Technology, the government's nodal agency, has assigned to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the complete responsibility for coordinating and operating the KVPY Program and has set up a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) to oversee its implementation. A core committee looks after the KVPY Program's everyday and academic aspects.
KVPY Streams:
There are 3 streams under which fellowships are granted. The details of these streams are mentioned below.
- KVPY SA Stream: Students in Class 11 with Science Stream can appear in SA stream.
- They must have a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science Subjects in 10th Standard Board Examination.
- The fellowship of the students selected under this stream gets activated only when they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) after passing 12th (within 2 years of passing 10th). Also they should secure a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the 12th Board Examination.
- During the interim period of one year, selected students are invited for Regional/National (Vijyoshi) Science Camp and their travel and other related expenses are met by KVPY.
- KVPY SX Stream: Students in Class 12 with Science Stream can appear in this stream.
- Students who are aspiring to join an Undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) in the next year; should secure a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the 10th Standard Board Examination and a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the 12th standard Board Examination.
- KVPY SB Stream: Students studying the 1st year of an Undergraduate program (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) can appear for this stream.
- They should have secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics) in the 12th Standard Board Examination.
- They must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.
Note -
- If students clear the written exam and interview; they are then eligible for admissions to institutes like IISc or IISER.
- The Indian Institute of Science administers KVPY to offer scholarship and contingency grants up to Pre Ph.D. for select students.
